La Confluencia was developed by the Land Ethic Action Foundation as a teaching and demonstration center for sustainable self-sufficient living. We are located within the Rio Azul Protected Natural Area (approximately 150,000 acres) which forms a part of the world´s largest UNESCO Temperate Forest Biosphere Reserve. Surrounded by old-growth forests, alpine meadows, and still potable rivers and lakes, here one is reminded daily of stewardship responsibilities.
Since 1995, LEAF has been active in the local community promoting and teaching sustainable living techniques including organic farming and gardening, energy and resource efficient construction, and alternative energy source development. Our teaching and demonstration center at La Confluencia conducts community benefit workshops and events relating to these issues throughout the year.
LEAF is also a founding member and active participant of the Rio Azul Protected Natural Area Landholders Association which is currently spearheading the effort to develop the Area’s Land Use Management Plan. La Confluencia was conceived, and built, as a model for sustainable development in protected areas such as this.
More recently, we have opened our doors to vacation visitors interested in participating in our activities whether in volunteer work programs, workshops or outdoor recreation. All revenue from these visits goes to support the Confluencia project. |
